Deployment Phase

You cannot play new cards into the battlefield (except via effects) other than during your Deployment Phase. That means you will have to prepare your board and think ahead to make the most of your next Event Phase. During Deployment, you can:

Summon

To summon a card is to play it Face-Up onto the battlefield:

  1. Pay its full Summoning Cost, if any (usually only Fabled cards have costs)
  2. Choose a valid zone that matches the card type, is empty, on your side, and conquered
  3. Choose an orientation; you can rotate the card to any of its 4 orthogonal directions
  4. Physically place the card on the zone in the chosen orientation
  5. Collect mana (if the card has Will, place that many mana counters on it)
  6. Resolve any "When summoned" effects

Set

To set a card is to play it Face-Down onto the battlefield. It is secret to your opponent, and has no orientation, costs, or effects. A set card must be flipped face-up when it is targeted (or at your will if it is an Artifact or has Ambush). When that happens, it is always summoned following the steps above. Flipping additionally triggers When flipped effects (that happens before collecting mana). Note that Fabled and monument cards can never be set.
